Importance of Discipline

Discipline implies adherence to specific well-defined rules. It essentially is the most common way of preparing oneself in dutifulness, self-control, expertise, etc. To be more exact, discipline in a way is an essential prerequisite of a civilized society. The absence of discipline means decay. As Aristotle properly put it, “Discipline is obedience to rules formed by the society for the good of all.”

How about we take an illustration of the solar system which is administered by specific regulations to keep up with amazing harmony and equilibrium? Without this order, there would be absolute turmoil. Similarly, talents blossom only in a disciplined person. Discipline, in this way, is fundamental for self-awareness and cultural as well as public success. Without it, there can be no settled arrangement of regulation, no scientific advances, no modern or innovative accomplishments, and so forth.

No army can put up a brave front against an enemy if it lacks discipline. That is the reason the military follows a specific set of rules. It demands loyalty to the nation and to superior officers, along with a feeling of partnership and status to adapt to a crisis. It’s a given that the absence of discipline here could be disastrous. By the way, there is a growing significance of discipline in student life. Since the seeds are sown in school life, carelessness since those days might be awful for the career as well as for building character.

By and large, students disregard the disciplinary approach in their work, and their dawdling and easygoing mentality turn out to be extremely dear to them, commonly making them discouraged and extremely disappointed. One doesn’t use one’s ideal ability because of the absence of discipline.

We have seen the outcome of numerous incredible characters who by sheer focused approach made all the difference for themselves as well as for society all in all. The existences of Mahatma Gandhi, Chandra Bose, Swami Vivekananda, and Pandit Nehru all concocted their game plans carefully and followed them stringently in an arranged manner. Of course, they have turned into a motivation for an entire age of people. Similarly, those who didn’t care for discipline in their life went into oblivion.

In a game/sport, you have an umpire/referee to uphold the rules of the game so the play could be in the right spirit. Every player has to observe the rules stringently. Important here is the absence of discipline even in off-field exercises can choose a player’s fate. The genuine model is Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli, Both started playing together in school days, and specialists thought of them as equivalent in ability. In any case, the outcome is before us. Today Sachin is the world’s most noteworthy! run-getter and century-producer in both ODI and tests, though Vinod’s career finished suddenly in spite of a decent start. Unquestionably Kambli couldn’t deal with his needs in a disciplined manner.

One of the significant components of discipline is actual immaculateness. Genuine substantial virtue calls for contribution to great activities. Great activities and great contemplations lead to immaculateness of psyche and keenness. Gandhiji characterized brahmacharya as the discipline which comprises command over every one of the faculties in thought, word, or deed.

One more part of discipline is practising limitation in any activity. Genuine freedom is an exceptionally esteemed and esteemed honour in our general public. In any case, we can’t give outright freedom. Discipline includes a restriction on freedom, which is vital for the interest of society. It is the state which acts through regulations that guarantee equity and fairness of chance for all. So it is true to say that discipline ensures justice and fair play.

To conclude, discipline is not only desirable but indispensable. Wherever discipline and guidelines of lead are missing, moral and material disintegration has set in. The bad habit never has an opportunity to crawl into a disciplined man. Youngsters experiencing childhood in focused and cheerful homes become dependable grown-ups. The rising crime graph in society can be attributed to the lack of discipline.

Academic Essay Example #6

Water Pollution

According to the World Health Organization, any foreign matter either natural or other sources which contaminate and pollutes the water or the water supply making it harmful to human and aquatic life is termed water pollution.

Gases, minerals, humus, and wastes created by living organisms are some natural wastes that pollute water. Industrial wastes include heavy metals and synthetic organic compounds. The discharge of these wastes into water bodies causes water pollution. Lead, manganese, and mercury affect marine life.

Drilling oil under the sea may prove dangerous for marine life. Oil is transported to distant places by ships. An oil spill or tragedy at sea wherein the ship capsizes causes the degradation of marine and aquatic organisms. It also threatens ecosystems that exist under the sea.

Water pollution may severely affect human, plant, and animal life. Accumulation of Nutrients and chemicals into water bodies results in the growth of phytoplankton and algae. This obstructs the penetration of oxygen and sunlight into water bodies which may result in the death of aquatic organisms.

When contaminated water is consumed, the pathogens enter the human body. It may cause various water-borne diseases such as typhoid, cholera, diarrhoea, dysentery, and jaundice. Metals such as lead, mercury, and cadmium dissolved in water may cause several diseases if they enter the human body. When water contaminated with cadmium was consumed by the Japanese, they were affected by a disease called itai-itai. Similarly, a disease known as Minamata affected the Japanese after they consumed fish that had a large concentration of mercury.

When phosphorus and nitrates from fertilizers are disposed of in water bodies, they promote the growth of algae. The presence of algae in water bodies in a large number reduces the amount of dissolved oxygen in water resulting in the death of fish and other water organisms.

Industrial effluents include chemicals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium. When these chemicals reach the human body through the consumption of fish, they may cause irritation, insomnia, and nervous disorders, which may also affect the brain.

Thermal pollution increases the temperature of the water which in turn reduces the level of oxygen in the water. This results in the death of many species of fish. Oil drilling and oil spills contaminate seawater which may also lead to the death of marine organisms.

Measures should be taken to prevent water pollution before the situation goes out of control. Anti-pollution scientific methods should be devised.

Sources of water pollution which cause an inflow of pollutants over a large area are known as non-point sources. Example: Runoff from agricultural fields. The following steps should be taken to reduce water pollution from non-point sources:

  • Two separate drainages should be built for sewage and rainwater so that both rainwater and sewage do not overflow together.
  • Nitrogen-fixing plants should be planted to reduce the use of chemical fertilisers.
  • Agrochemicals and pesticides should be used judiciously to prevent them from draining into a water body.
  • Efforts should be made to prevent the runoff of manures.
  • Bio fertilisers and biopesticides should be used.

Sources that discharge pollutants to only one specific site are known as point sources. Example: Discharge of effluents from the factory into a river. To prevent pollution from point sources, it is essential to first treat wastewater before it is discharged. Laws should be made carrying strict punishment for discharging untreated wastewater into any water body.

Academic Essay Example #7

Poverty

Poverty is the inability to secure the minimum human needs of food, clothing, housing, education, and health. When a person is unable to fulfil these basic needs, it leads to pain and distress.

Poverty can be categorized in many ways. In one of the methods of categorizing poverty, the people who always remained poor or are usually poor but sometimes have a little more money are grouped together and are known as chronic poor. The people who are rich most of the time but sometimes become poor are known as occasionally poor. The people who are never poor are called the non-poor. They can be categorized as not-so-poor, middle class, upper-middle-class, rich, very rich, millionaires, and billionaires.

The problem of poverty can be solved by accelerating the pace of economic growth. A higher growth rate creates new employment and income-earning opportunities. Efforts should be made to incorporate new and modern techniques of production so as to improve productivity and production. Similarly, mechanization should be followed in the agriculture sector so as to improve production. An increase in production would lead to higher income and thereby, help eradicate poverty.

In addition to rapid economic growth, it is necessary to ensure that the increased income does not remain concentrated in a few hands. In other words, to remove poverty it is necessary to remove the inequality of income and wealth. This can be achieved by means of legislative and fiscal measures. Legislative measures include such measures as the Minimum Wages Act, Minimum Support Price, Right to Education, etc. Such measures raise the income earning capacity of people and improve their standard of living.

On the other hand, fiscal measures comprise taxation and subsidy measures of the government. A high rate of taxes can be levied on the high-income group while the poor are granted subsidies. In this sense, the purchasing power is transferred from the rich to the poor. Similarly, pensions, scholarships, grants, etc. can be granted to the poor. Both the legislative as well as fiscal measures are aimed at encouraging an egalitarian society and reducing poverty.

A high population growth rate offsets the benefits of a high economic growth rate. Even when the level of national income is high, the per capita income will remain low if the population growth rate is high. Thus, to combat poverty, it becomes necessary to control the population growth rate.

People should be made aware of the benefits of a small family and different family control measures. Another measure of controlling the population is encouraging female education and employment. Stress should also be laid on other similar measures such as education, research in the field of family planning, and population control.

The poor are worse hit by the rising prices. Rising prices reduce purchasing power and make it difficult for the poor to purchase even the basic necessities. To reduce poverty steps must be taken to ensure stability in the prices. A two-fold methodology can be adopted for price stability. First, by increasing the production of goods and services, and second, by distributing the essential goods to the poor through fair price shops and ration shops.

Unemployment is one of the major causes of poverty. Steps must be taken to eradicate unemployment. India is a labour-abundant country, and one of the measures to increase employment can be to adopt labour-intensive techniques of production. Similarly, to absorb the labour in rural areas cottage and small-scale industries must be encouraged.

Self-employment must be encouraged in both rural areas and urban areas. Self-employed persons should be provided with such facilities as credit, marketing, transportation, technical training, etc. Besides, to improve employment in the country, it is necessary to make the education system more job-oriented, so that people have the practical knowledge and skill required for gainful employment. A reduction in unemployment through these measures will help in the reduction of poverty.

Such people and their acts, through which they could show wonder, always rouse others to follow. The study of history influences one’s character.

No doubt, the present generation has become materialistic as a result of modern science and very few students are going to study history. Their goal has changed. They are keener to earn more and more money for enjoying lavishly rather than philosophizing about historic events.

The modern man is seeing no gain in the study of history unless his goal is to win the competition for accomplishing a task or get an education to make himself ready to work for a respectable goal. A man with his tendency towards history conveys a thought process to work on something for humanity. Their motto is for historic achievement and they work for the nature of being perfect. A man can be recognized only when he works in an unprecedented way, for which history is the subject, which gives motivation through past occasions.

A host of our ancestors have accomplished incredible work for mankind. History speaks about their admirable performance. Many emperors made history by ruling the country gloriously. The following step came when he learned cultivation and started eating food grains. The past of the man is romantic and it is an interesting subject to study.

History must be studied for many important reasons. Its study increases our understanding of caste, religion, tradition, and customs. Its study clarifies that all were man-made. The fundamental point behind it was to make a framework for work, feeling, and civilization in society. There is no religious sanctity attached to anyone. It is changing with the difference in time.

The study of history gives us a judgment that the division on the basis of caste and religion has no obvious importance. It is an obstacle to advancement, as a matter of fact. It requires introducing a reform wisely. The study of the history of other countries gives information about their way of life and their lifestyle. Solutions to Poverty

Only Science is not enough

Science is knowledge, systematic, and formulated knowledge. Knowledge is power. Primitive man used to roam from place to place in search of food and shelter. He was feeble and at the mercy of nature. The sun, the moon, and the stars amazed him. He worshipped the forces of nature. The development of the wheel and the discovery of fire were the accomplishments of primitive man.

The beginning of the scientific arena was a ‘small step for man but a giant leap for mankind.’ The advent of science has changed the life of man. With his intellect, man has proved his superiority over other beings on earth. Man ventured into the sea and discovered unknown land. He also discovered that the world is round and it revolves around the sun. The laws of gravitation were discovered by man.

Man discovered electricity, and invented the telephone, the radio, wireless, fax, television, and computer. Aeroplanes, trains, trams, buses, cars, and ships have made journeys easier, quicker, and more comfortable. With the help of science, man has been able to conquer not only this earth but space also. With the successful landing on the surface of the moon, the distance between the earth and other planets is considerably reduced.

The important discoveries and inventions in the field of medical science, have provided relief to mankind. It has led to a low mortality rate and increased life expectancy. The Discovery of penicillin is an epoch-making (755) incident. The causes of smallpox, malaria, filaria tuberculosis, polio, plague, and cholera, were identified. The human body can be operated upon for curing cancer. Open-heart surgery can be conducted easily. The discoveries of antibiotics and drugs have reduced the suffering of mankind to a great extent.

Agriculture also has benefited from scientific inventions. Improved methods of irrigation better quality seeds and the use of fertilizers and manures have also helped to increase the yield. New tools and implements, tractors, and power tillers have benefited farmers in various ways. New hybrid seeds and drought-resistant seeds have helped to increase the yield. Science has lessened manual labour.

With the advancement of science, discovery, and invention of pieces of machinery and the establishment of factories, various industries have produced goods to make human life comfortable. If we go strictly by the literal meaning of civilization it is an advanced stage of social development that people have achieved. Science has definitely and irrefutably helped up in this direction Now the question: ‘Is science enough’? Can only science give a man joy, mental peace, and solace in sorrow? The answer is: ‘no’, Only Science is not enough.

Science has given man materialistic comfort and physical comfort. Only science cannot raise moral values and cannot give aesthetic pleasure and joy. What science cannot give, poetry can give, philosophy can give, and holy renderings of prophets and seers can give. So for material comfort, physical comfort, and food, for safety and shelter man will depend solely on science. But for spiritual joy and aesthetic pleasure man must read scriptures and read poetry i.e. literature and find comfort in all kinds of fine arts.

Literature, painting, music, and all kinds of fine arts yield aesthetic pleasure and appeal to people of all ages, all countries, and all times. Man’s knowledge of life is deepened and enlarged, feelings are sharpened, and sensibilities are quickened by the reading of poetry and literature. Cultivation of fine arts improves moral faculties It can be said that science is for material gain and physical comfort while fine arts are for mental joy, pleasure, and comfort. Only science will make a man robot. So science and arts both are equally required to make this world a happy abode for mankind.
