‘Holi’ is the festival of colours that always looks forward to. Holi is one of the main festivals celebrated in India that has great importance and impact on Hindu mythology. It is celebrated all over India in the month of March with great zeal and enthusiasm. The vibrating colours of Holi have an incredible meaning of affection, delight, and satisfaction. People forgive and forget their enemies and the distinctions between rich and poor, gets together and partake in this festival with lots of activities.

‘Holi’ is named after ‘Holika’ the sister of savage King Hiranya Kashyap. Long ago, king Hiranya Kashyap had a son named Prahalad was a young prince. Hiranya Kashyap was a devil and he did not believe in God as well as Lord Vishnu. he asked people and his son to worship him instead of God. But Prahalad was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu and he worshipped God, not king Hiranya Kashyap.

Consequently, Hiranya Kashyap decided to kill his son Prahalad as he was not worshipping the king and worshipping Lord Vishnu instead. Hiranya Kashyap called his sister Holika who was blessed not to be burnt in the fire. Hiranya Kashyap asked his sister Holika to kill Prahalad by taking him in her lap and setting him ablaze. Instead of Prahalad, Holika was burnt to ashes as Lord Vishnu was protecting Prahalad. Therefore, Holi teaches us that every evil spirit has an end and marks the victory of good over evil.

‘Holi’ is a lovely festival that makes people come closer to their dear ones. People greatly enjoy Holi with joy and enthusiasm. They play Holi with different colours and colour water. Soon after, they are covered from head to toe in different colours of the rainbow. Children eagerly wait for Holi and they play colour pranks and pour colour water on everyone. Children fill coloured water in balloons and Pichkari (water cannon or water gun) and throw them at the people who are meandering on the road. They put a little colour on the feet of their elders and seek blessings from their elders and from god. They dance and sing in joy and happiness.

At the time of Holi, people dance and sing with great zeal and enthusiasm. People meet one another and praise their happiness and joy by rubbing colours on each other cheeks. Some people prepare many buckets of coloured water and freely throw them at the people who are meandering on the road. They welcome one another and offer various kinds of sweets.

It is a public and religious holiday and thus, almost all the government and non-government organizations such as public offices, banks, post offices, etc remain closed on Holi. On Holi, schools and colleges remain closed and many people are able to plan for a long tour with their families.
