Satyajit Ray was born on 2 May 1921 to famous poet Sukumar Ray and Suprabha Devi. He was a renowned film director with a versatile personality who directed several unforgettable movies. His masterpiece, ‘Pather Panchali’, won numerous awards including the President’s gold medal and twelve international awards in 1955. He followed it up with the other two of the trilogy – ‘Aparajita’ and ‘Apur Sansar’ in 1956 and 1999, respectively, and went on to make other renowned movies like ‘Mahanagar’, ‘Charulata’, ‘Ashani Sanket’, ‘Sonar Kella’, and ‘Agantuk’.
Ray was also a famous literary figure, known for his works like Feluda and Professor Shanku. In 1992, he was honoured with the prestigious ‘Oscar’ by the Academy of Motion Pictures, and he was awarded the ‘Bharat Ratna’ just before his death on 23 April 1992.
