The first Indian woman to venture into space was Kalpana Chawla, hailing from Karnal in Punjab, who attended Tagore Bal Niketan for her early education. After graduating from Punjab Engineering College with a degree in Aeronautical Engineering, she earned a Master’s degree from the University of Texas and a Doctorate from the University of Colorado. She became an American citizen and joined the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), embarking on her first space journey in 1997 alongside five other astronauts.
However, fate had other plans for this accomplished woman. Sadly, while travelling in the Spaceship Columbia on 16 January 2003, Kalpana and her fellow crew members crashed over Texas just fifteen minutes prior to landing. Despite her untimely death, her remarkable achievements continue to inspire both men and women around the world.
