The environment is a collection of all living and non-living things. The environment around us includes light, air, soil, plants, birds and animals, forests, rivers and mountains, houses, buildings, factories, schools and colleges, offices and courts. The environment is of two types – natural and social or cultural.

Environment influences the existence and development of an organism. Pollution is the process of making the environment dirty by adding harmful substances. Humans have created a polluted environment due to indiscriminate industrialization. He has continuously interfered with nature which has become a threat to the sustenance of mankind.

Earth is where we live and will pass on our legacy to future generations. But if they inherit the present state of the world, they will not be able to sustain themselves. Humans have improved the technology of producing goods for physical comfort and mental pleasure. The industrial revolution greatly increased the use of natural resources. Man has exploited nature for his own benefit, without considering the consequences of his actions.

Environmental pollution has resulted in the pollution of water, soil, and air. In India, all the sources of Portable water like rivers, lakes, ponds, and wells have been polluted and declared unfit for drinking. Due to the increased use of chemical fertilizers, river water and seawater have become harmfully polluted. Oil slicks and pollution from industrial waste, sewage and fertilizer runoff threaten aquatic life. Waterborne diseases like cholera, jaundice, gastroenteritis, and dysentery are caused due to water pollution.

Air pollution is a direct effect of industrialization. Smoke emitted from industrial and thermal power plant chimneys and vehicular fumes are causes of air pollution. Deforestation, destruction of rubber plantations and burning of plastics also increase air pollution. The Taj Mahal in Agra, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is affected by smoke from the chimneys of the Mathura Refinery.

The chlorofluorocarbon gas in the atmosphere is responsible for the depletion of the ozone layer. Due to ozone layer depletion, the sun’s ultraviolet rays reach the earth’s surface more easily. UV rays are responsible for skin diseases. An ozone hole has already formed in the South Pole region.

The modern world has to face new pollution, and noise, which is caused by loudspeakers, aeroplanes, processions and gatherings, crackers and fireworks etc. Studies have shown that noise pollution can cause ulcers, miscarriage, cardiovascular disease and high blood pressure.

Pollution problems cannot be separated from questions of economic progress, political stability, social awareness, immigration and international aid. Pollution problems are multifaceted and complex. But global awareness of the environment has been growing since the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment held in Stockholm in 1972. Policy Statement on Pollution Abatement, 1992 comes with instruments in the form of Acts and Regulations. Pollution prevention and control.
