200 Words Paragraph #1

NELSON MANDELA

Like Mahatma Gandhi, African leader Nelson Mandela battled against the oppression of the South African people by whites. He received a legal lawyer education. However, he joined the African National Congress and dedicated himself to the goal of achieving equality among all Africans—white and black—by fighting against the policy of apartheid, or the segregation of the black native Africans from all positions of power and privilege. Instead of living comfortably and in luxury as a successful lawyer, he did the opposite. Mandela was sentenced to life in jail by the reactionary South African government in 1962.

Mandela was finally released from jail on February 11, 1990, after 27 years and 9 months of imprisonment, as a result of other African National Congress leaders’ ongoing fight for freedom. Nelson Mandela became the first black African to hold the office of President of the Republic of South Africa when the African National Congress won the general election on the basis of the universal adult franchise that had been implemented by the administration of President F.D.H. Clarke.

Mandela’s greatness stems not only from his success in convincing the white South African government to abolish the hateful and inhuman apartheid, but also from his inspiring call to blacks not to seek vengeance on whites for past acts of tyranny, injustice, and exploitation.

200 Words Paragraph #2

STEPHEN HAWKING

Brilliant scientists have come and gone, but perhaps none have accomplished anything under the circumstances that Stephen Hawking has faced. When Hawking was 21, he was in his third year at Oxford when he was diagnosed with a severe Motor Neurone disease that broke his nerve cells and atrophied his muscles. His words became slurred. Other communication organs were also destroyed. Doctors only gave Hawking two more years to live. Despite this bleak prognosis, Hawking not only completed his course at Oxford, but also went on to complete his PhD thesis, marry, and have three children. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1974, a rare honour for any scientist.

Hawking contracted pneumonia again during a research trip to Switzerland, and his windpipe was operated on. This resulted in a total loss of speech. ‘A Brief History of Time’ and ‘The Universe in a Nutshell’ are two books that popularised his epoch-making theories about the Creation and the Universe. Academic honours have been bestowed upon Hawking, who is widely regarded as the greatest physicist and mathematician since Einstein. Stephen Hawking has demonstrated how the human intellect and spirit can overcome the most severe physical handicaps.

200 Words Paragraph #3

ENERGY CRISIS

Machines are at the heart of modern civilization. Machines require a constant supply of energy to function day in and day out, or they will come to a halt. Our transportation systems—diesel-powered railways, steamships, automobiles, and aeroplanes—constantly require natural fuel to function. Many human efforts have been expended over the last three centuries in search of energy sources—coal, petroleum, and water-generated power—that will allow civilization to continue unabated.

Not only that but as the world’s population grows, so will the demand for energy. However, there is a genuine concern that the world’s reserves of petroleum, coal, and hydropower are gradually depleting. That is why new and unconventional energy sources such as nuclear and solar energy must be developed.

While advanced countries in America and Europe have the wealth and scientific know-how to commercialise solar and nuclear energy, poorer Asian countries such as India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh may develop an energy source through bio-gas-producing machines. But the point is that research into the development of new energy sources must be expanded and accelerated.

CIGARETTE SMOKING IS INJURIOUS TO HEALTH

Tobacco was discovered in America for the first time. Its widespread cultivation with the assistance of negro-slaves made it one of the most important export items in the American economy. Tobacco was also grown in other parts of the world, including Burma and Cuba. Cigarettes made of tobacco rolled in tissue paper aided in the spread of a very harmful habit among the West’s so-called advanced countries. It then spread to various other countries around the world. Attractive packaging and expert advertising aided in spreading the addiction to smoking cigarettes even among the poorest segments of the population.

However, it has recently been discovered that smoking causes a variety of serious physical ailments, that include from coughing, sore throat, laryngitis, and asthma to the fatal disease cancer. Furthermore, even people who are unintentionally exposed to cigarette smoke while in the company of a smoker can develop any of these diseases. This demonstrates how hazardous the habit of smoking cigarettes is. It has been discovered that quitting smoking can cure a variety of diseases. As a result, we should all avoid the bad habit of smoking cigarettes.

200 Words Paragraph #5

THE USES OF COMPUTERS

The computer is one of modern science’s marvels. Its origins can be traced back to the mechanical calculating machine invented in 1834 by Charles Babbage, an English mathematician. Because of the lack of engineering skill at the time, the machine was unable to fully realise Babbage’s vision. Computers today are electronic. A computer can operate at high speeds because it is powered by a small current of electricity. It can perform calculations on very large numbers in a very short period of time using stored information and data.

A computer can add, subtract, multiply, and divide large numbers in seconds. Even an expert mathematician would take much longer to complete such calculations. Computers are now widely used in all advanced countries for data processing, which includes fact compilation, correlation, and selection. The use of computers is increasing in all fields of research, industry, and business. Computers have numerous advantages. They save time, speed up work, save labour, and reduce costs in the long run. They are used in educational institutions, industries, research laboratories, government departments, and so on in all advanced countries.

200 Words Paragraph #6

ENVIRONMENTAL POLLUTION AND HOW TO STOP IT

The term “environment” refers to a healthy natural balance of air, water, animals, plants, and other natural resources. However, today’s environment is being poisoned in a variety of ways all over the world. The main cause of environmental pollution is the world’s growing population. More people equals more industry. Toxic gases are released into the atmosphere by factories, and filthy poisonous waters are discharged by mills and factories. For also released into river waters; trees are cut down for fuel and other commercial purposes, or to acquire land for house construction.

As a result, the supply of oxygen provided by trees decreases. Animals and birds lose their habitat when trees are cut down, destroying the ecological balance. Humans are attacked with a variety of diseases such as asthma, hypertension, various types of heart disease, bronchitis, pleurisy, and so on.

The hooting of cars and buses causes sound or noise pollution, particularly in cities, and listening to music over loudspeakers exposes people to another type of environmental pollution. To keep these hazards from endangering human, animal, and plant life, action should be taken before the situation worsens. There should be more trees planted. Scientific anti-pollution methods should be developed.

200 Words Paragraph #7

VALUE OF SCIENCE IN EVERYDAY LIFE

Science has done wonders for modern civilization. It has made human life simpler and more comfortable. The man had to rely solely on the mercy of nature in ancient times, and in society, manpower was the only source for doing any laborious work. Man invented new appliances and applied new techniques to do things in all walks of life as time passed. Man has now entered the nuclear age. He is now capable of deciphering many of space’s mysteries. Science has advanced human society to unimaginable heights in some Western countries.

Even a small needle cannot be manufactured today without the use of science. It saves both time and labour. Railways, trams, buses, ships, and aeroplanes have made travel more convenient and faster. Again, radios, wireless, telephones, fax, television, and computers aid in the rapid spread of knowledge. Science has performed miracles in the field of medicine, though its work is not yet finished. However, scientific achievements are not without their drawbacks. Unless and until scientific inventions are widely used for the good of humanity and civilization with a quest for peace and progress, they will end up destroying the civilization that has been built over such a long period of time and with such hard work.

200 Words Paragraph #8

BLOOD DONATION: A SOCIAL DUTY

The value of blood as a life-saving component cannot be overstated. People with diseases like leukaemia and chronic anaemia need regular blood transfusions to survive. Also, those who have lost a lot of blood due to bleeding from wounds and injuries from accidents and other acts of violence need blood to replenish the lost blood.

All these urgent needs require a stock of blood in the blood banks of government hospitals from where people who need blood can get it immediately at a critical moment. Doctors assure us that the amount of donated blood is replenished soon and the donation does not have any harmful effect on the donor’s physical condition.

One only has to remember that such a blood donation which has no harmful effect on the blood donor himself can save a precious life while hanging precariously in need of the precious fluid. Blood donation camps are organised by social organisations, political parties, and other charitable organisations. If such organisations are genuinely interested in meeting a valuable social need, every right-thinking citizen should come forward and donate his blood, remembering that his blood could save a life.

NEWSPAPER: ITS UTILITY

It is impossible to imagine modern life without newspapers. A newspaper is a reliable source of important news from both the United States and around the world. It represents the world’s current and living history. Newspapers are classified into daily, weekly, biweekly, and monthly publications. A daily paper’s main function is to publish news of general interest, whereas the others mostly contain literary pieces and articles on important topics. Every newspaper nowadays has some special sections dealing with politics, everyday problems, unusual news, business, sports, editorial pages, feature pages, and so on.

As a result, the newspaper is one of the most powerful organs for spreading news and opinions to the general public. It is crucial in educating people and directing them in the right direction. It is capable of successfully combating social evil if it so desires. A newspaper can also be very harmful. When used incorrectly, it can breed hatred and enmity between men, sections, and nations.

Sometimes it publishes baseless reports or stories to deliberately create confusion in the minds of gullible people. Newspapers are as powerful as any powerful weapon. It can be used for both good and evil. A lot depends on the attitude and intentions of the people at the top of the paper.

200 Words Paragraph #10

CAPITAL PUNISHMENT

The phrase “Capital Punishment” means the death sentence awarded by a court of law against persons convicted of treason, aggravated robbery, rape, etc. Many will support guilty pleas for some heinous crime, such as premeditated murder. In the past, such a punishment was a death sentence on the basis that a person who destroys another person’s life or destroys a woman’s life by rape is unfit to live and deserves the death penalty.

Furthermore, capital punishment serves as a deterrent to others who, in the absence of such severe punishment, may commit heinous and inhuman crimes. However, some people believe that the state should not follow a “tooth for a tooth and an eye for an eye” policy represented by capital punishment. A criminal is a destroyer of human lives, no matter how ignominious those lives may be as a result of their cruel actions.

Furthermore, the death penalty serves as a deterrent to others who might otherwise commit heinous and inhumane crimes without fear of such severe punishment. However, some argue that the state’s “tooth for a tooth and eye for an eye” policy should not include the death penalty. A criminal, a destroyer of human life, regardless of how humiliating that life is demonstrated by their cruel actions.

Because of his perverse and depraved mentality, killing can happen, but a state should not act as capital punishment is trending in many countries. Life imprisonment, penal servitude and, when necessary, psychiatric treatment of persons guilty of violent and inhumane crimes are recommended as alternatives to capital punishment.
