Global Warming and the Future of Mankind

An increase in the average temperature of the earth is called global warming. During the 20th century, the global average temperature increased by about 0.6°C. Rising global temperatures lead to changes in rainfall patterns in the world. While some areas may experience recurrent droughts, some areas may experience regular floods.

One of the main causes of global warming is the excessive accumulation of greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide traps the sun’s heat and prevents some of the heat from escaping back into space. As a result, the Earth’s temperature has increased, resulting in global warming.

Large-scale deforestation has also played an important role in increasing the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Trees absorb carbon dioxide and maintain soil fertility. Therefore, large-scale deforestation leads to global warming.

When fossil fuels such as coal and petroleum are burned, they release large amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, causing global warming.

If the sea level rises by twenty inches, the coastal areas of India, Myanmar, Bangladesh and the Maldives will go underwater. Climate change will increase floods, droughts, and cyclones. Soil and sand will spread to desert areas due to dryness. As temperatures rise, pests will increase and agricultural yields will decrease. Forests will be destroyed. The ecosystem will be threatened.

A direct effect of global warming is the increase in heart disease and heart stroke. Scientists, researchers and environmentalists are trying their best to discover how to control global warming. Although they have yet to come to a conclusion, they have suggested some measures to slow the rate of temperature rise.

The following measures can be taken

  • To reduce the burning of fossil fuel, reduce the use of nitrogen fertilizer, reduce the wastage of petroleum products;
  • To encourage aforestation so that ecological balance is maintained;
  • To increase the use of non-conventional energy:
  • To make people conscious of the greenhouse effect and global warming.

The world is now under increasing temperature. The World Meteorological Organization has declared 2010 as the ‘world’s hottest year’. If global warming is not controlled, the future of mankind and human civilization is dire.
