Ancient Indians had knowledge of rocket science, which was used during wars. After independence, India achieved remarkable achievements in the field of science and technology and in the field of space. It was Dr Vikram Sarabhai who established the Physical Lab in Ahmedabad on Veterans Day 1947.

The foundation of space research in India was laid in 1969 with the establishment of the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO). Space programs are now used in communication, broadcasting, meteorology, disaster management etc. A satellite launch vehicle failed in 1979 and it was ISRO’s first attempt.

However, success was achieved in 1983 with the developmental flight of SLV-3 and the achievement of sending back over 2000 images. There was no success in the space program in 1987 and 1988 as Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle (ASLV) launches in these two years ended prematurely. However, in May 1992, ISRO launched ASLV 3 which lifted the expanded Rohini satellite.

The successful launches of INSAT-3B in 2000 and GSLV-D1 in 2001 were notable achievements. Some notable achievements are the successful flight of PSLV-3C in October 2001, INSAT-3C in January 2002 GSLV-GST in May 2003, GSLV (Fl) in September 2004, PSLV C6 in May 2005, PSLV-C7 in 2006, PSLV C8 in 2006, and Three GSLVs in 2007, PSLV C9 with ten satellites in April, on October 22, 2008, India successfully launched PSLV-II Chandrayaan I and so on. The Government of India has formulated ‘Vision 2025’, a long-term plan for a space research program by 2025, identifying goals, program directions and technology requirements. The program includes the development of reusable launch vehicles and advanced launch vehicle systems with critical technologies for human space flight programs; Developing capabilities in space communications to meet development needs in education and literacy, health care rural development, and disaster management.
